Stir every paint in the tray and you get brown-grey mud. Shine every colour of light on one spot and you get white. Same colours, opposite answers — and both completely true, because paint and light are playing two different games.
🔺The Second Prism
In the 1660s Isaac Newton did what people had done for centuries — let sunlight fall through a glass prism and watched it fan into a band of colours. Then he did the part almost nobody had bothered with: he caught the band with a second prism and squeezed it back together.
Newton later drew that band curled into a circle so red and violet touched — the ancestor of every colour wheel taped to every classroom wall since. He also named seven colours, and there is a good chance he settled on seven partly because a musical scale has seven notes. Every boundary on the spectrum was drawn by a person, which is why different languages carve the same rainbow into different numbers of named colours and every one of them is correct.

Twelve slots, and every one of them can then be lightened, darkened or dulled — which is how twelve becomes thousands. Learn the four relationships on this circle and colour stops being a mystery and starts being a map.
The dashed line is the red–green axis: complements sit directly opposite. Put them side by side and each makes the other louder — a bright orange fish against a blue-green sea is the most orange orange you will ever see, and the sea is doing it.
The honest footnote your printer would like to add: red, yellow and blue is the traditional artist’s set, taught for two centuries because it works well enough to paint with — but it is not the best-performing trio. Printers use cyan (a bright greenish blue), magenta (a hot pink) and yellow, because that combination mixes a noticeably wider range. A true red-yellow-blue set struggles badly to make a clean bright pink or a clear turquoise, and no amount of stirring rescues it. Look at any home printer’s cartridges: cyan, magenta, yellow — and black, because mixing the other three gives a muddy near-black rather than a good deep one.
⚖️Two Completely Different Games
A red apple is not full of red. It is full of a pigment that swallows most of the wavelengths landing on it and bounces the reddish ones back at your eyes. A screen does the opposite job: it sits there making its own light. So one gets darker and the other gets brighter, and neither is cheating.
Mud is not a mistake. Mud is subtraction working exactly as advertised — every extra pigment is one more swallower sharing the same puddle, until almost no light escapes at all. And red light plus green light really does make yellow, which sounds wrong the first time and is completely true.
👁️Colour Finishes Inside You
Why red, green and blue — why those three? The answer is not out in the world. It is inside you. The back of a typical human eye carries three kinds of colour-sensing cell, each most sensitive to a different stretch of the spectrum.
A screen never has to produce real yellow light. It only has to hit your three cones with the same combination of readings that real yellow light would have produced. Colour does not finish happening until it reaches the person looking.
🚦Which is why colour should never be a design’s only signal. Some people’s cone cells are arranged differently and they genuinely see certain colours differently — most commonly finding reds and greens hard to tell apart. Good designers plan for it as a matter of course, and the rule is worth stealing: always add a shape, a label, a pattern, or a position. A chart where the only difference between two lines is red versus green is a chart some of your readers cannot use.
🪣Three Tubes, Three Hundred Colours
Three small words quietly unlock a paint box. A tint is a colour plus white. A shade is a colour plus black — and black is powerful stuff, so a tiny amount does the job of a large amount. And any colour can be muted by stirring in a little of its complement.
This is why a serious painter can work all day from a limited palette — sometimes just a red, a yellow, a blue and white. Restricting the palette does not restrict the painting. It guarantees every colour on the canvas is related to every other one, and that family resemblance is most of what people are reacting to when they say a picture looks harmonious.

Two more worth knowing: a cone cell is one of the three kinds of colour-sensing cell at the back of your eye — three readings is all your brain ever gets — and a limited palette is a deliberately small set of paints (often a red, a yellow, a blue and white) that a painter uses on purpose, because every colour mixed from the same few tubes is automatically related to every other one.

🎞️Film colour-grading suitesAlmost every film and streaming show you watch has been through a colour grade, where a specialist adjusts the colour of every single shot after filming. One reason so many action films look teal and orange is straight colour theory: human skin sits on the warm side of the wheel, so pushing shadows and backgrounds toward the opposite side makes people pop off the screen. Once you know the trick you will spot it in trailers for the rest of your life.
🚸Traffic signals & safety designEngineers designing signals and warning labels have to work around the fact that red and green are the pair many people find hardest to distinguish. That is why traffic lights keep a fixed order, so position tells you as much as colour does; why warning signs pair colour with a distinct shape; and why hazard labels repeat the message in words. Colour theory used not for beauty, but so a signal still works for everybody who has to read it.

💎Ultramarine blue was once ground from lapis lazuli mined in what is now Afghanistan and hauled halfway round the world, which made it more expensive than gold. In the 1820s a prize was offered for a synthetic version, chemists produced one, and the most costly blue in Europe became something you could buy for pennies.
🦐A mantis shrimp’s eye carries far more kinds of colour receptor than your three. Researchers think it does not actually see more shades than you do — it seems to use all those receptors to recognise colours very fast rather than to compare them finely.

1Paint subtracts and light adds. Pigments absorb part of the light and bounce back the rest, so mixtures darken toward mud; coloured lights pile up, so mixtures brighten toward white.
2The wheel is a map of relationships. Primaries you cannot mix, secondaries from pairs, tertiaries from a primary plus its neighbour, complements opposite, analogous colours adjacent.
3Colour finishes happening inside the viewer. Three kinds of cone cell are the reason a screen can fake every colour with only red, green and blue — and the reason colour should never be a design’s only signal.

A screen’s yellow and a lemon’s yellow are physically different events that look identical to you. Does that mean the colour is in the light, in your eye, or somewhere else entirely?
Pick a colour and list everything it means to you. Then ask someone older, or someone from a different background, to do the same. Where do your lists overlap, and where do they part company?
