Powder, Glue & a Puddle

Every paint ever made is coloured powder plus glue — and the glue decides everything. Change the binder and the same blue becomes watercolour, oil, acrylic or egg tempera. Then water turns up as a second artist with opinions of its own, and half of learning to paint is learning to collaborate with it.
🧪Two Ingredients, Four Personalities
Open any tube of paint and there are exactly two important things inside: pigment, which is coloured powder, and binder, which is the glue that holds the powder together and sticks it to your paper. That is the whole recipe. The astonishing part is how much depends on the second ingredient.

Gouache belongs to this family too: it is opaque watercolour — the same gum arabic binder, more pigment, and additions that make it dry flat and matte. That flat matte finish is exactly why animation studios painted backgrounds in it for decades. Glossy paint would have thrown reflections straight into the camera.
💎Why Watercolour Glows
Watercolour dries down to a layer so thin that light travels straight through the colour, hits the paper underneath, and bounces back out. That one fact reorganises how a watercolourist thinks about a whole picture.

Paint a pale moon onto a finished sky. The white in a watercolour is bare paper nobody ever touched. Which means the whites have to be planned before the very first brushstroke.
Neither family is better. Opaque paint forgives and watercolour mostly does not, and they simply ask different things of you. A glaze works in both: a transparent layer laid over a fully dry layer, so the two colours mix in your eye instead of in the puddle. Yellow over dry blue reads as green, with no green paint anywhere in the picture.
💧Water Is the Second Artist
Here is the rule that explains almost everything watercolour does: pigment goes wherever the water goes, and stops when the water stops. Your real control knob is not the brush — it is how wet the paper is at the moment the paint lands.

Generations of students groaned at blooms. Then somebody looked properly and noticed a bloom’s edge is uncannily like a cloud edge, lichen on stone, rust creeping across metal, the bark of an old tree. Now painters cause them on purpose, timing the second drop to the second. A technique is only an accident somebody paid enough attention to repeat.

Different centuries, different tools, one question
The British painter J. M. W. Turner spent his life chasing light, weather and the sea, and left the nation thousands of sketches and watercolours. The American painter Winslow Homer worked in watercolour outdoors and fast, on boats and shorelines, where the medium’s speed was the entire point. In China, Japan and Korea, ink painting traditions built a whole art around one loaded brush and absorbent paper, where a stroke cannot be corrected and the discipline lies in the pause before it. The American painter Alma Thomas, given a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in the nineteen seventies, filled canvases with small separate dabs of colour that read like mosaic from across a room. Every one of them was asking the same thing: what does this material actually want to do?
🌈The Wheel, and the Truth About Mud
Paint mixes subtractively: each pigment you add removes more of the light coming back, so mixtures get duller and darker rather than brighter. Colours sitting opposite each other on the wheel — complementaries — cancel each other most efficiently of all.

Printers use a different trio — cyan, magenta and yellow — which mixes a wider range.
Real bark, real shadow and real skin are full of these greys and browns. The skill is not avoiding mud forever — it is learning to make the exact mud you want, on purpose. A tiny touch of a colour’s complement is also the standard way to calm a colour down without reaching for black.
“My colours went muddy, so I did something wrong.” You did something predictable. An enthusiastic puddle of everything is complementary mixing working exactly as designed. Nothing is broken and no better paint would have saved it — the fix is fewer colours in the mix, not a bigger paint box. A limited palette of five or six colours is a decision experienced painters make on purpose, not a shortage.

Two more worth knowing: granulation is heavy pigment settling into the paper’s low points for a speckled, sandy look, and complementary colours are the pairs sitting opposite on the wheel — red and green, blue and orange, yellow and violet — which cancel each other into greys and browns.

🔬Museum conservation labsConservators must know exactly which pigment and which binder are in a painting before they touch it, because a solvent that safely cleans one binder will dissolve another. X-ray and infrared imaging reveal underdrawings and earlier versions hidden below the surface — which is how we know famous painters changed their minds mid-picture too.
📖Illustration & animation studiosWatercolour and gouache never left professional illustration. Picture-book artists, storyboard painters and background painters still reach for them because they are fast, and they scan and photograph cleanly. Many digital painting apps now imitate these materials directly — right down to blooms.
💙Ultramarine blue was once ground from lapis lazuli carried thousands of miles overland, and cost more than gold — so painters saved it for the most important part of a picture. A chemical version invented in the eighteen hundreds made the same blue cheap enough for anyone.
🎲Prussian blue was discovered by accident in Berlin in the early seventeen hundreds by someone trying to make a red. Several of the most useful colours in art history arrived exactly that way — sideways.
🎞️Gouache dries flat and matte with no shine at all, which is precisely why animation studios painted backgrounds in it for decades. Glossy paint would have thrown reflections into the camera.

3Blooms, granulation and salt textures are not failures — they are effects painters learned to trigger deliberately. And mud is complementary mixing behaving exactly as it should.

Remember: the question every painter is really asking is “what does this material actually want to do, and how do I collaborate with that?” Tilt the board and let the wash pool. Drop a second colour in and walk away instead of stirring. Make the stroke once instead of fixing it four times. Then look at what happened and decide whether to keep it. And if your paper keeps buckling, check the paper before you blame yourself — heavier watercolour paper changes a beginner’s results more than any brush ever will.
