The Door Keeps Getting Wider

For all of history until 1877, hearing music meant being in the room where it was happening. Recording, then amplifiers, then synthesizers, then computers each widened the door — and none of the world’s older traditions politely stepped aside. More people are making more kinds of music than at any moment in human history.
🚪Before 1877, Music Vanished As It Was Made
Thomas Edison built a machine with a needle, a diaphragm, and a cylinder wrapped in tinfoil. You spoke into it while turning a crank, the needle scratched a groove matching your voice, and then the machine spoke back. It is difficult now to feel how strange that was — because before that year, every note ever performed by any human being had vanished at the moment it was made.

The 1980s made the machines cheap, and that is when the door swung widest. Affordable synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and a shared standard called MIDI so they could all talk to each other. Entire genres were then invented by people with no formal training, working on second-hand equipment — because for the first time the equipment was within reach.

Recording did not just change listening. It changed learning.
For the first time, a young player could put the needle back at the beginning and study one performance over and over, note by note, until they could play it. That is exactly how a whole generation of players taught themselves to improvise — and it is exactly what you are doing when you loop a fifteen-second clip until your fingers get it. Same trick, better buttons.
🎛️Capture a Sound, or Build One From Nothing
These are two completely different jobs, and mixing them up is the most common misunderstanding about electronic music. A microphone catches something that already exists. A synthesizer manufactures something that never did.

Most people were unconvinced this counted as music until 1968, when Wendy Carlos released Switched-On Bach — Bach performed entirely on a Moog, one line at a time, because early synthesizers could play only one note at once. It sold enormously and settled the argument. A synthesizer was an instrument.
🧅Layers: One Person, a Whole Band
After the Second World War, magnetic tape changed recording again — because tape can be cut, spliced, and recorded over in sections. Les Paul, a guitarist and inventor, recorded one part, then played another along with it and recorded that too, stacking layer on layer until one person had become an entire band.

The most impressive demonstration may be from 1963, at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in London. Delia Derbyshire was handed a theme tune written by Ron Grainer for a programme called Doctor Who. There were no synthesizers to speak of — so she generated raw tones with test oscillators, changed their pitch by changing the tape speed, cut the tape with razor blades, and assembled the melody note by physical note. It sounded like the future and was made with scissors.
🌏None of It Politely Stepped Aside
Here is the part people leave out of the technology story. The world’s older traditions did not quietly fold. Every one of these is touring, teaching, recording and changing — and somebody is at a rehearsal for one of them this week.

Technology did not replace tradition. More kinds of music are being made at the same time than ever before in human history.
UNESCO added mariachi to its list of intangible cultural heritage in 2011, and in the United States mariachi is now a school subject — thousands of students play in school ensembles the way other students play in a concert band. Meanwhile the largest taiko drums are hollowed out of a single tree trunk, which means the size of the instrument has always been set by the size of the tree.
“Technology killed real music.” The evidence says otherwise — but there is an honest trade to name. Making something has never been easier, and being heard has never been harder. The tools now hand you polish for free, which means the scarce ingredients are taste, patience, and having something you actually want to say. Software can even generate music from a written description now. That does not answer the interesting question; it sharpens it. What do you want to say, and who are you saying it to?

Two more worth knowing: MIDI is the shared standard agreed in 1983 that lets keyboards, drum machines and computers send each other note instructions — not sound, just messages saying which note, how hard, and for how long — and the theremin, built around 1920, is an instrument you play without touching it: you move your hands near two antennas and the air between you and the machine is the interface.

🎬Film, TV & video game audioA modern score is a hybrid of everything on this chart. A composer sketches in software, a live orchestra records in a hall, synthesizers and samples get layered underneath, and a mixing engineer balances it all against dialogue and sound effects. The parts the orchestra reads are still printed in notation a medieval monk would recognise — and delivered as a folder of files.
🏫School & community ensemblesTraditions stay alive through ordinary weekly rehearsal. School mariachi programmes, community taiko groups, steel bands, university gamelan ensembles, pub sessions for Irish tunes — all the same: someone experienced shows up, someone new shows up, and the music gets handed over one evening at a time. Oral tradition, running alongside the studio rather than replaced by it.

1Each invention widened the door. Recording let more people hear music, amplification and synthesis let more people make it, and computers and the internet let more people publish it — without asking a company’s permission.
2Machines have not replaced traditions. Taiko, mariachi, gamelan, steel pan, playback singing and dozens more are touring, teaching and evolving right now, alongside the laptop and not underneath it.
3The tools got easy, so the hard parts are what they always were — practice, taste, and having something worth saying. Polish is now free; meaning is not.
🤔 Think about it
If you could record one sound from your own life so that somebody in the year 2226 could hear it, what would you choose — and what would you want them to understand from it?
Software can now produce polished music from a written description. What does that change about what a human musician is for — and what does it leave completely unchanged?
Remember: the tools change every decade or so, and the job has not changed at all. Somebody sat in a cave forty thousand years ago and made a pattern in time and meant something by it. That is still the whole assignment — whether you are hitting a taiko drum, hauling a bow across a fiddle in a pub, or finishing a track on a laptop at the kitchen table. The door is open, and it keeps getting wider.
