The plot is what happens — but the theme is the hidden, universal lesson you can carry into your own life.

Above the water = the plot you can see — the events of the story.
Hidden below = the theme, the bigger lesson holding it all up.
Authors usually show the theme through what characters learn — they rarely just say it!

Theme: Hard work and planning ahead pay off later.
