In a famous 1973 study, Chase and Simon showed chess masters a board from a real game for about five seconds. Masters rebuilt most pieces perfectly — they saw chunks like "castled king" and "pawn chain." Beginners managed only a handful.

⏱️Berlin, 1990 & the 10,000-Hour Myth

At a famous Berlin music academy around 1990, Ericsson handed violin students diaries and asked them to log every hour of their week. All of them were talented and well taught — so why were only a few headed for world-class solo careers?
The future soloists' solo sessions were focused, exhausting, and aimed like arrows at their weakest spots, with a teacher's feedback guiding every fix.
By age 20 the top group had logged around 10,000 hours — roughly twice the students headed for teaching careers.
⚠️Myth vs. fact
The myth (2008): writer Malcolm Gladwell turned that number into a slogan — the "10,000-hour rule," a magic finish line for mastering anything. It went viral.
The fact: Ericsson spent years correcting it. 10,000 was an average of those violinists at age 20 — some logged more, some less, and none were finished improving.
Different skills need wildly different amounts of time — and the hours only counted because of what was inside them.
