NASA's Artemis program isn't just visiting the Moon — it's going back to STAY, building a base camp at the Moon's south pole as a stepping-stone to Mars.

Apollo astronauts landed, hopped around for a day or two, and rocketed home. Artemis goes back to build a permanent base camp — and it will carry the first woman and first person of color to the Moon. (Artemis was Apollo's twin sister in Greek myth!)

SLS blasts off Earth. Orion rides on top, carrying up to 4 astronauts toward the Moon.

Gateway is a mini station orbiting the Moon — a "parking spot." A human landing system takes the crew the last stretch down to the surface.

❄️Why the South Pole? Frozen Water!
🌙Ice Hiding in the Dark
Sun stays low always-shadowed crater 💧 water ice (−400°F!) 🥤 melt it → drink 🫁 split it → oxygen to breathe ⛽ split it → rocket fuel
At the south pole the Sun stays low, so some crater floors never see sunlight — they trap water ice for billions of years. Astronauts could melt it to drink, split it for oxygen, or even make rocket fuel. Hauling water from Earth is expensive — finding it already on the Moon changes everything!

The Moon is only ~3 days from Earth, so if something breaks, help is near. Crews practice the hard skills — living in spacesuits, surviving radiation, growing food, using local ice — that they'll need for the far harder trip to Mars.
