Living Off the Land

You can't pack enough air, water, or fuel to reach Mars. So In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) makes them from the planet itself.
🧳The Impossible Suitcase
❌ Bring it ALL from Earth heavy payload heavy fuel needs MORE fuel → too big to launch ISRU ✅ Make it on Mars light rocket → cheap & possible to launch
Every extra kilogram of water and fuel makes a rocket too heavy. ISRU means "use what's already there," so the launch stays light.
⛏️What Mars Gives Us
🟤REGOLITH
What it isLoose, rusty, dusty soil over bedrock
UseBake it into bricks for shelters
🧱 walls · 🛡️ radiation shield
🧊WATER ICE
H₂O
What it isFrozen water buried in the soil
UseMelt & clean it to drink
💧 drinking water · 🔋 raw material
💨CO₂ AIR
~95% CO₂
What it isThin air that's ~95% carbon dioxide
UseTurn it into oxygen & fuel
🫁 oxygen · 🚀 rocket fuel
🏭The Chemistry: Air, Water & Fuel
⚡ ELECTROLYSIS water (H₂O) split by electricity 🫁 Oxygen Hydrogen → 🔬 MOXIE (from air) CO₂ air in strips off oxygen 🫁 Oxygen 🔥 SABATIER REACTION CO₂ air Hydrogen hot reactor 🚀 Methane fuel 💧 + water ⛽ PROPELLANT = fuel + oxygen 🚀 Methane to BURN 🫁 + Oxygen to burn it
A chemical plant melts ice into water, uses electrolysis to split it into oxygen + hydrogen, and runs the Sabatier reaction to brew methane rocket fuel from CO₂ air — that's propellant production.
🔴Proof It's Real: MOXIE on Mars
MOXIE CO₂ O₂ out
🛰️ NASA proved ISRU works!
A toaster-sized box called MOXIE rode the Perseverance rover
In 2021 it made the first ever oxygen on another planet
It ran 16 times — the real start of living off the land
🔑Key Terms
🪐ISRU Making supplies (water, air, fuel) from materials found right where you are, not carried from Earth.
🟤Regolith The loose, dusty, rocky soil covering Mars and the Moon — can be baked into bricks.
🧊Water Ice Frozen water buried in Martian soil that can be melted and cleaned to drink.
Electrolysis Using electricity to split water into breathable oxygen and hydrogen gas.
💨Carbon Dioxide CO₂ — the gas that's about 95% of Mars's thin air; raw material for oxygen and fuel.
🔥Sabatier Reaction Mixes carbon dioxide with hydrogen to make methane rocket fuel plus water.
🔬MOXIE A toaster-sized NASA experiment that made oxygen from Martian air to prove ISRU works.
Remember: ISRU lets explorers "live off the land" — turning Martian dirt and thin air into water, oxygen, and fuel is the key that unlocks deep space and the trip home!
