A ripe banana would arrive as a bag of brown mush. So every stop from the reefer to the shelf holds the fruit in the same narrow temperature band — and the band is narrow in both directions.

The honest footnote
A large part of what makes bananas cheap is that the growing and cutting happen where wages and land cost far less than in the countries that eat the fruit. Of the money you hand the cashier, only a small share travels back to the farm. Some shoppers look for labels such as Fair Trade, which promise growers a minimum price plus extra funds for their communities. People genuinely disagree about how well those programs work — that disagreement is worth knowing about, not skipping past.

🛒Grocery buying teamsProduce buyers don’t order “bananas” — they order a ripeness stage. A store that sells out by Friday asks for greener fruit than a slow store, so the ripening room is planned around each store’s own rhythm.
