Stand on a sidewalk and you’re standing on the roof of a city you have never seen. Infrastructure is designed to be boring — you’re only supposed to notice it when it stops.

Why manhole covers are round: a circle cannot fall through its own opening, no matter how you turn it. Try that with a square lid and the diagonal drops straight down the hole.

It’s done by living things. Billions of microbes in enormous tanks eat the dissolved waste, while operators keep them fed and supplied with air.
🧱 Sewers have one famous enemy: the fatberg. Cooking fat poured down a sink cools, hardens, and grabs onto wet wipes, which don’t fall apart the way toilet paper does. One found under Whitechapel in London in 2017 was reported at roughly 250 metres long. The prevention is unglamorous and completely effective: only pee, poop, and paper down the toilet — cooled fat goes in the trash.
Why the Grid Shouts, Then Whispers
Sending power at hundreds of thousands of volts sounds reckless. It’s actually the whole reason the grid works — and a transformer is just a translator between shouting and talking.

Not a mystery, and not a crisis to panic about. Usually something physical and local — a tree limb, a storm, a failed transformer, or equipment that shut itself off to prevent damage.

And somebody is already on it. While your lights are off, people in bucket trucks are working the pole that failed. When storms are big, utilities send convoys of crews across state lines to help each other — an arrangement called mutual aid that has been running for decades.

Two more worth knowing: a fiber optic cable is a bundle of hair-thin glass strands that carries data as pulses of light bouncing along inside the glass — and a blackout is a loss of electric power across an area, usually caused by something physical like a downed line or a failed piece of equipment (different from a brownout, which is a deliberate drop in voltage to stretch a limited supply).

🎧Water crews hunt leaks by listeningA leak under pavement makes a faint, steady hiss. Technicians press sensitive microphones onto hydrants and valves to pinpoint the spot — so one small hole gets dug instead of tearing up a whole street to go looking.
🚚Line crews after a stormRestoration follows a deliberate order — big lines and substations before individual houses — because it brings the most people back the fastest, even though it means the last few homes wait longest.
📞Before anyone digs — a fence post, a mailbox, a pool — you call a free utility locating service and somebody comes out and paints the lines. In the United States you dial 811. That’s why the paint code exists at all.
🏛️Ancient Rome’s main sewer, the Cloaca Maxima, was begun more than 2,500 years ago — and parts of it still carry water down to the Tiber today, making it one of the longest-serving pieces of infrastructure on Earth.
💡Success looks like nothing at all. A water system that works is a faucet you never think about; a grid that works is a boring light switch. That’s also the problem: it’s hard to care about something you never see.

Remember: infrastructure is careful thinking, buried on purpose, plus a crew that shows up. Next time a street gets painted before it gets dug, you can read the colors — and know exactly what’s down there.
