More than 80% of our ocean has never been mapped. We send robots and submersibles to explore "inner space" — darker, colder, and more crushing than outer space.

As you sink, sunlight fades to black and pressure grows — about one more atmosphere every 10 m. By the deepest trenches it is over 1,000× the squeeze at the surface, so we send machines instead of people.

Great for surveying huge areas of empty seafloor on its own.
📡Seeing With Sound — Sonar & Bathymetry
1) send sound pulse ↓ 2) echo bounces back ↑ 3) time the echo → distance to the bottom hidden mountains, ridges & trenches
Light only reaches a short way, so we "see" with sound. Sonar sends a pulse, listens for the echo, and times it. Sweep it back and forth and you build a depth map — that's bathymetry.

Where there's no sunlight, animals make their own light with chemicals.
They use the glow to hunt, hide, find a mate, and scare enemies.

The trash is hauled back to shore to be recycled — blue tech that protects, too.
