Your working muscles send chemical signals meaning we need more oxygen and more fuel, and within a couple of heartbeats the whole delivery network changes shape. Your heart beats faster and squeezes harder. But the cleverest move is the one almost nobody knows about: your body redirects the traffic.

Try it: measure the machine
Press two fingers gently on the side of your neck or the thumb side of your wrist. Count the beats for 15 seconds, then multiply by 4. That is your resting heart rate in beats per minute. For most kids between about 6 and 15 it lands somewhere around 70 to 100 — but everybody’s different, some people naturally run faster or slower, and your doctor is the one who knows your body best. Now move for two minutes and measure again.

Your breathing gets deeper before it gets faster — and the trigger is not the one most people assume. Your body is not primarily watching for oxygen running low. It is watching carbon dioxide building up.

🧪The Lactic Acid Myth
For decades almost everyone said lactic acid pooled in your muscles and caused the ache you feel two days later. Researchers checked. It does not hold up — and the real story is much more interesting.

Drink water when you are moving for a long time. And say it plainly: how much you sweat varies enormously from person to person and is not a score. Nobody is winning or losing at sweating.

That is the real reason a walk can untangle a bad afternoon. Moving your body means energy, strength, a steadier mood, a clearer head, and the plain fun of being able to do things — it has never been a punishment, and it is never something you owe anybody.
