Fitness is a recipe, not a ranking. Strength, stamina and flexibility are three separate ingredients — every body carries a different mix, each one grows in its own way, and ordinary play trains all three at once.
🧍♀️The Question That Is Broken
Three kids stand in a gym. Somebody asks which one is the fittest — and the honest answer is that the question does not work. Fitness is not one number that ranks people. It is a recipe, and different people arrive carrying different amounts of each ingredient.
Three people, three different ingredients, zero useful ways to squash that onto a single scale.
💪Strength: Your Nerves Go First
Strength is how much force your muscles can produce at once. Here is the surprise: over the first few weeks, the improvement is mostly not happening in the muscles at all. It is happening in your nervous system — more fibers switched on at the same instant, in better order, with fewer muscles fighting each other.
The shape of the idea, not exact numbers. It is why someone can get noticeably better at pull-ups in three weeks without looking any different at all — and before puberty especially, better wiring is where most of a kid’s strength gains come from.
🚫
Myth check: “strength work stunts your growth”
People repeated that for years. When researchers actually studied it, the claim did not hold up — and today groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics describe supervised strength activity as safe and genuinely good for young people: stronger bones, fewer sports injuries, more confidence. The real rules are about how, not whether. And everybody’s different — if you have a condition or an injury, your doctor knows your body best.

You already own the equipment. Push-ups, squats, monkey bars, hanging, carrying, climbing, scrambling up a slope — a body and a playground build plenty of strength with nothing purchased.
🌊Stamina: You Install New Equipment
Stamina is the ability to keep going — and when it improves you are looking at some of the most dramatic remodelling the human body does. You did not just get tougher mentally. You installed new machinery, at a microscopic scale, in the exact places you used.
Deliver the same oxygen at a lower heart rate, from a muscle that can now use more of it. That is what “getting fitter” physically means.
🎯 Specificity: you improve at what you actually practise, in the way you practise it. Endless bike rides build a phenomenal engine for cycling, and only some of that carries over to swimming, because swimming asks different muscles to do a different job in a different position. That is not bad news — it is a set of instructions. If there is something you want to be able to do, the fastest route is usually to do that thing, a little at a time, over and over.
🤸Flexibility: Use It or Lose It
Flexibility is the range of motion your joints travel through, and it follows the most use-it-or-lose-it logic of the three: your body maintains the range you regularly ask for, and quietly gives back the range you never use.
🪑Why chairs are sneakySitting folded into the same shape for hours a day, every day, is your body being told which ranges it apparently does not need — which is why hips and hamstrings slowly start to feel tighter.
🔁It comes back the way it leftThrough being used. Gentle moving stretches work well before activity; longer, calmer holds work well afterwards or as their own quiet session.
⚖️Flexibility varies enormously between bodies for reasons nobody chooses. Jonah’s palms on the floor are not evidence that he tries harder than Priya, and Priya being unable to do it is not evidence of anything about Priya. Compare yourself to your own last month, not to the most bendy person in the room.
🪜A Little More Than Last Time
So how does any of it actually grow? One idea covers all three ingredients: progressive overload. Ask your body for a bit more than it is used to, and your body treats that as information — message received, apparently we need to be able to do this now.
The plan is always the same shape: challenge, recover, repeat, and creep the challenge upward. Jump too far too fast and you get injured; never move the bar at all and nothing changes.
✨The Smallest Word That Changes Everything
A phrase you have probably seen on a classroom poster turns out to be a plain description of biology. The psychologist Carol Dweck popularised the idea of a growth mindset, and the small word at its heart is yet.
Your body is not deciding whether you are a talented person. It is just answering the question you keep asking it.
🎈Play Is Real Training
Here is the part that should make you close this page and go outside. You do not need a gym, a coach, or a plan to train all three ingredients — ordinary play already does it.
Add shovelling snow, scrambling over rocks, and messing about on a scooter. Fun is the ingredient that makes you come back tomorrow — which makes it the most important one on the list.
🔑Key Terms
💪StrengthHow much force your muscles can produce — pushing, pulling, lifting, holding, or climbing against resistance.
🌊StaminaHow long you can keep going before you have to stop; also called endurance.
🤸FlexibilityHow far your muscles and the tissue around your joints will comfortably let you move.
📐Range of motionThe full arc a joint can travel through, from one end of the movement to the other.
🎻CoordinationGetting many muscles to fire in the right order, at the right moment, so a movement comes out smooth instead of clumsy.
🌬️AerobicActivity steady enough that your body keeps supplying oxygen as you go — biking, swimming, dancing, a long game of tag.
🪜Progressive overloadGradually asking your body for a little more than it is used to — slightly longer, slightly harder, slightly more often.
🔌Motor learningYour brain and nerves getting better at a movement: more fibers switched on, better timing, less wasted effort.
Two more worth knowing:adaptation is the physical change your body makes in response to what you repeatedly ask of it — new mitochondria, tougher tendons, better-organised nerve signals, like a dirt path that nobody built and enough footsteps made — and a growth mindset means treating an ability as something that grows with practice rather than something you either have or do not.
🌍Where You’ll See This in Real Life
🩹Physical therapy clinicsRebuilding after an injury is progressive overload in its purest form. A therapist might start someone with a stretchy band and a movement so small it looks like nothing, then add a little every few days for months. Same principle as an athlete’s plan — different starting point.
🏅Adaptive & inclusive sportWheelchair basketball, para-athletics, blind football and Special Olympics programmes build exactly the same three ingredients. The equipment and the rules adapt; strength, stamina and coordination grow the same way in every body that practises them.
🦴You have more than 600 skeletal muscles, and even taking a single step calls on a large share of them working in sequence. Walking is a coordination feat that took you about a year of full-time practice to learn.
🐇Muscle fibers come in fast-twitch and slow-twitch varieties — quick and powerful versus steady and tireless. Everyone has a mix, the proportions differ from person to person, and both kinds get better with practice.
🛰️Astronauts on the International Space Station exercise around two hours a day, because without gravity to push against, muscles and bones start giving back what they are not being asked to do. Up there, use-it-or-lose-it is not a slogan. It is the schedule.
📌Remember This
1Fitness is a recipe, not a ranking. Strength, stamina and flexibility are separate ingredients, and different bodies carry different amounts of each.
2Your body adapts to what you repeatedly ask of it — starting with your nervous system, which is why “not yet” is a literal description of what is happening inside you.
3Play is real training. Tag, climbing, dancing, swimming and carrying things build all three ingredients, with no gym required.
🤔 Think about it
Your nerves get better at a movement before anything about your muscles changes visibly. Where else in life does the real progress happen well before anyone can see it?
Three people are excellent at three different parts of fitness. What goes wrong — for them and for everyone watching — when we try to squash that onto a single scale?
⭐Remember: bodies are for using, in whatever way is fun for the one you have. Pick the ingredient you want more of, ask for a little more than last time, rest so the upgrade can get built — and add the word yet to the end of any sentence that needs it.
