Who Designed Your Afternoon?

Somebody spent months deciding what happens when you pull down and let go. Almost none of it works on a person who can see it happening. That’s the whole skill: see the design, then design back.
📜The Scroll With No Bottom
In 2006, a designer named Aza Raskin solved a small, sensible problem. Web pages made you click “next page” over and over, so he built something that loaded the next batch automatically. It was elegant. It was helpful. It spread to nearly every feed on the internet.
😬Years later Raskin went on the record saying he regrets it, estimating that the design he invented burns through a staggering amount of human time every single day. He is one of several people who helped build the modern internet and have since said, publicly, that they’d do it differently.
📉In 1971, the economist Herbert Simon spotted the economics long before the technology arrived: information consumes attention, so as information becomes abundant, attention becomes the scarce thing. Scarce things get markets.
🏷️That market is why a service can be free. You are not the customer — you are the inventory. None of that is secret and none of it is illegal. It just explains almost everything about how the apps on your home screen behave.
Nobody here is a cartoon villain. Some of the loudest critics of these designs are the people who built them. What actually does the choosing is a scoreboard: run enough experiments, ship whatever wins, and a product drifts toward whatever holds people — whether or not a single person on the team ever intended it.
🛑Move 1 · Delete the Stopping Cue
Older media came with natural endings. A magazine ran out of pages. An episode finished and somebody had to change the channel. Researchers call these stopping cues, and they matter far more than they sound.

Autoplay does the same job for video: continuing takes zero decisions and stopping takes one.
🎰Move 2 · Make the Reward Unpredictable
In the mid-twentieth century the psychologist B. F. Skinner found something that turned out to be enormous: an animal rewarded every time presses a lever steadily — and an animal rewarded at random presses far more, and keeps pressing long after the rewards stop.

Most refreshes deliver nothing. Occasionally one delivers something great. That is the engine.
🧠 The honest version of the dopamine story. You’ll hear that apps “flood your brain with dopamine.” Here’s what researchers actually think: dopamine is more about wanting and anticipating than about pleasure itself, and it spikes for the surprise rather than the reward. The popular “dopamine detox” idea is pop science, not neuroscience. You don’t need brain chemistry to use any of this — you need one sentence: unpredictable is sticky.
⚙️Move 3 · Own the Defaults
A notification is not a message that happened to arrive — it’s an interruption somebody scheduled. But the deepest lever is the plainest one: the setting you never changed.
🔴The red badgeIt exists because red badges get tapped. That is the entire reason for the color.
🔥Streak countersThey turn quitting into losing something — which is a very different feeling from simply stopping.
💬Read receipts and “typing…”These turn a conversation into an obligation. Somebody chose to show you that.
📦The box already tickedStudy after study finds most people simply accept whatever a product arrives doing — which is why the sticky options are almost always on by default.
And it cuts both ways. If most people never change a default, then changing one is the single highest-leverage move available to you — one decision, made once, that quietly replaces a thousand decisions you would otherwise have to make while tired.
🔬What the Research Actually Says
Here’s the part where you deserve honesty rather than a lecture. Headlines will tell you screens are destroying a generation. The actual research is much messier than that.
📊The average effects are small, and researchers argue about themLarge analyses tend to find small average associations between screen hours and well-being, and serious researchers disagree in public about what those numbers even mean.
🥣“Screen time” lumps everything togetherVideo-calling your grandmother, building something in a game, doing homework, and staring at a feed at midnight all count as the same hour. That’s why hour-counting turned out to be a weak tool — and why the American Academy of Pediatrics dropped its one-size-fits-all hour limit for school-age kids and replaced it with a family media plan.

It’s: instead of what? That’s displacement — and the thing the hour most reliably comes out of is sleep.
Devices in the bedroom and gripping content right up to bedtime cut sleep short — mostly because the content is gripping and the hour is late, and somewhat because of light. “One more episode” is the most expensive default setting in most houses.
✍️Writing Rules You’ll Actually Keep
Build rules that don’t depend on being strong at 11pm. Environment beats willpower, reliably, for everybody — including adults, including the people who designed the app.
🚪Decide the exit before the entranceSay what you came for and how you’ll know you’re done. “A bit of YouTube” has no finish line. “The two videos about the gearbox” does.
⚙️Change defaults once, not a thousand timesNotifications off except for actual humans. Autoplay off. The stickiest app off the home screen, or logged out entirely.
📍Make rules about places, not minutesFar easier to keep and much less argumentative: no screens at the table, none in the bedroom overnight, chargers live in the kitchen.
🐢Add friction in front of whatever gets youOne extra tap. A longer password. An app on the second page. You could still get it — you mostly won’t bother.
🎸Protect the replacement, not just the removalAn hour you delete without a plan comes straight back. The rule works when the alternative is already sitting there.
👨‍👩‍👧The grown-ups are inside the rule tooA rule that applies only to kids doesn’t work. Family media plans work best when everyone is in them — a completely reasonable thing to say at dinner.

Your body gets a vote — and its signals are easy to ignore mid-scroll
Eyes tire because you blink less and focus at one distance for a long time, so optometrists suggest the 20-20-20 habit: about every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Stand up, since sitting still for hours makes you feel worse than the screen does. Get outdoors, which is good for your eyes for reasons researchers are still untangling. And notice your neck — the position you’re reading this in probably isn’t the one you’d have chosen.

🌍Where You’ll See This in Real Life
🧪Product teamsCompanies run A/B tests: two versions of a screen go out to different groups of real users, engagement is measured, and the winner ships. Repeat that thousands of times and a product evolves toward whatever holds people. The scoreboard does the choosing.
🏛️Governments and schoolsRules are catching up to the design. The UK’s Age Appropriate Design Code requires services likely to be used by children to ship with high-privacy defaults and features like autoplay and nudges switched off. France banned phones in schools in 2018, many districts elsewhere have followed, and phone makers added screen-time dashboards to their own operating systems.
🗳️Defaults move people more than almost anything. Researchers comparing countries where organ donation is opt-in with countries where it is opt-out found dramatically different consent rates — same humans, same values, different box already ticked.
🕰️Herbert Simon described the attention economy in 1971 — before the personal computer, let alone the smartphone. He simply noticed that abundant information must make attention scarce, and the rest followed.
⚖️One Last Thing, In Fairness
💡 Screens are also where you learn from strangers who are brilliant at things, keep up with a friend who moved away, build, draw, code, and find the exact niche community that gets your weird interest. The goal was never less screen. The goal is more choosing. And if you notice that certain apps or accounts consistently leave you feeling worse than when you opened them — that’s not a mood, that’s data. You’re allowed to act on it.

1If a product is free, your attention is what’s being sold — and engagement metrics quietly reward whatever keeps you there. No villain required.
2Three moves do most of the work: remove the stopping cue, make the reward unpredictable, and rely on defaults you never changed. Naming a move takes most of its power away.
3Change the environment, not your willpower. Defaults off, rules about places rather than minutes, friction in front of the sticky app, a plan for what the time gets spent on instead — and the same rules for the grown-ups.
🤔 Think about it
The designer of infinite scroll says he regrets it. If you build something a billion people use, how much of what it does to them is your responsibility — and how would you have known in advance?
For one week, notice which apps leave you feeling better than when you opened them and which leave you feeling worse. What would change if you arranged your home screen by that instead of by how often you use each one?
Remember: you don’t need more willpower — you need a better-designed afternoon. See the move, name the move, then change one default, add one bit of friction, and put one rule on a place rather than a clock. That’s designing back.
